2013 was a crazy year for me. 2014 was a lot calmer. It was about broadening my horizons and planting new seeds. Less of the old, more of the new. Less stress, more restoration. Less anxiety, more repose. Less travel, more deliberate journeys. I cut my travel by more than half -- 24 flights with 55 days out of the country, compared to 58 flights & 114 days in 2013. This was a year of several planned outages.
I took time to enjoy and explore the countryside around my home, but couldn't help travelling just a little bit further afield too. I took my first ever family ski holiday at Les Deux-Alpes and discovered the best Pasteis de nata in Lisbon with my wife. I flew to Seoul (Gagnam-style, of course) and took an early-morning run around the sites of Paris. I enjoyed the best spa-on-a-boat in Montreal and discovered the boss-level saunas of Helsinki. I listened to pitches in a palace in Vienna and enjoyed fireside chats in Berlin. I spent some good times with good friends in Stockholm. I put back on 10lbs! But ran two half-marathons.
Work-wise, I made a shift and joined Makeshift to turn hacks to products to businesses. In doing so, I had the pleasure of working with some awesome people on several products, including HireMyFriend and Attending.io. I'd got back on the startup rollercoaster, it just happened to be several cars on several different tracks. I obsessed for several months over computational sound and smart hearing. After enjoying the research and finding a potential co-founder, I considered starting a company. Instead, I joined Seedcamp to help and invest in other European early-stage startups. It's been an amazing experience so far.
My wife closed her first-ever business, Imaginabox. But took a brave step and quit her job of 12 years and to join the amazing team at LostMy.Name. And last but not least I spent a lot of time with my sons, mostly accompanied by Lego, Minecraft or trips to the park.
Here's to 2015. Fingers crossed for another good one.
